Hiking is also awesome in winter
Are your hiking boots already wistfully stowed in the basement and are you looking back with a crying eye at the ended hiking season? Don’t do so! Because even in winter, Germany has a wide range of unique panoramic and mountain trails to offer. In today's blog post, we propose you our personal winter hiking favourites. Experience winter from its most charming side.
The Black Forest: from Sankt Georgen to Triberg
The Black Forest is the undisputed Mecca for all hiking enthusiasts - and in every season. In winter, when the untouched nature presents itself in a snow-white winter dress, a hike from the sunny mountain town of Sankt Georgen to Triberg is worthwhile.
The winter hiking trail leads through the snowy Rossbergwald, to the Hörnlesberg, along the Triberg waterfalls to Triberg.
Plan about three hours for the route. This gives you enough time to pause here and there and to enjoy the unique winter landscape to the fullest.
Allgäu: from Breitachklamm via Reute to Oberstdorf
The natural beauty, countless sights and the Bavarian charm make the Allgäu a popular destination. Even in winter, there are various highlights in this beautiful holiday region.
We especially liked the winter hike to Breitachklamm. The river leads to a narrow path that winds its way close to the cliffs. Past a crystal-clear ice wall, the unique view of the wildly romantic Breitachklamm, which emerged after the last ice age, gradually opens up.
Before the hiking trail leads on to Oberstdorf, it is worthwhile taking a quiet look at the natural spectacle in its diverse beauty for a few minutes.
After all that hard work, visit the idyllic town of Oberstdorf and extend your experience with a half-price overnight stay at the Alpengasthof Hörnlepass.
Erzgebirge: circular Pöhlberg route
The Pöhlberg in Saxony can already be seen from the foot of the Erzgebirge. It is the local mountain of Annaberg-Buchholz and it is the Uetliberg of Zurich.
On the circular route at 830 meters above sea level you have a unique deep and wide view over the Ore mountains. The tour is mostly flat and takes around 50 minutes: ideal for those who want to take it easy.
After a good hike in cold temperatures, the body craves for a bit of relaxation and warming up. Let the excursion end in the wellness area of the holiday Hotel Markersbach.

A hike through the winter wonderland of Germany - whether in the Black Forest, Allgäu, Erzgebirge or other touristic destinations - is a real highlight. Thanks to Hotelcard, a two-day excursion with your loved ones is also affordable.
